As many schools in the state of Michigan wrap up their dead-weeks and get ready to start training and fall camps again, teams continue to formulate and plan out the last remaining games on their schedule. Some schools may not find opponents until a week before the season, but nevertheless, schedules are beginning to finalize.
Many teams in Hillsdale County currently have finalized fall schedules for their football teams. Before the pre-season begins to roll for many teams, it is time for a look at the fall schedules for County teams as well as their previous records and historical notes going into this new season.
The Hillsdale Hornets football team will be heading into this fall looking to play a full slate of games against non-conference and conference opponents in the LCAA. The Hornets did not play their first three games of the 2020 pandemic season. Jonesville is again slated as the scheduled opener, and Onsted will be the first conference game they will play. 2021 Fall Notes
This is the eighth year in a row that Jonesville and Hillsdale will open against each other. They started the series in 2014 in a game won by Hillsdale 49-14. Hillsdale is undefeated in the opening season series. In 2019, Jonesville and Hillsdale played twice, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. Hillsdale won both of those games. The 2020 opener was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Jonesville finished the season losing to Michigan Center in a district championship game.
Berrien Springs finished last season with a 3-3 regular season record. The Shamrocks lost to Lansing Catholic Central in an opening playoff round.
Onsted followed-up their 2019 state semi-final appearance with a 0-6 regular season record. They lost to Jonesville in a Division 6 opening round playoff game by a score of 41-48.
The Hudson Tigers finished last season with a 3-3 overall record. They lost to the Hornets to open the Covid-19 shortened season 21-28. Hudson would lose a pre-district semi-final matchup against Sand Creek.
Blissfield finished with an undefeated regular season in 2020. They defeated the Hornets 31-14. After beating Westland Lutheran and Ida to get to the district championship, they would lose to Clinton High School 13-16.
The Ida Bluestreaks finished the regular season in 2020 with a 3-3 regular season record. Hillsdale defeated Ida 50-20 in the middle of the season. They lost a pre-district semi-final matchup with Blissfield in the playoffs.
The Columbia Central Golden Eagles finished with a 2-4 regular season record. Hillsdale defeated the Golden Eagles in a close game 22-21. Columbia Central would be defeated by Stockbridge in an opening round playoff game by a final score of 28-36.
Dundee finished the 2020 regular season with a 1-5 regular season record. Hillsdale defeated the Vikings by a score of 27-0. The Vikings lost to Gross Ile 28-47 in the pre-district semi-final game.
The Clinton football team finished the regular season in 2020 with a 5-1 record. Their only loss came to Blissfield, who they were able to beat in the district championship rematch. They defeated Michigan Collegiate, and Constantine on their way to a Division 6 State Finals appearance. They lost to Montague 14-40. Hillsdale lost to Clinton 14-21 to end the season.
Historical Notes Going into the Season
This is the first game that the Hornets will play against Berrien Springs in school history.
Hillsdale finished this past season with a opening playoff lost to Olivet. They made the regional championship in 2019 where they lost to league opponent Onsted. The playoffs are a tradition for the Hornets. Since 2001 and the introduction of the new division alignments for High School Football, the Hornets have made the playoffs all but one season. The 2016 season saw the Hornets finish 4-5.
The Hornets have won three district championships in their school history. In 2006, 2012, and 2019.
In 2006, the Hornets won their first and only regional championship against Allendale by a final score of 32-18. They would play in the Division 5 state semi-finals against Madison Heights Madison. They lost 15-20.
The Hornets have a history of jumping conferences. They started playing in the LCAA in 2012. Before that, they played in the SMAA until 2011, the SMAA-S until 2007, the TRAC until 2004, the TVAA until 2000 which they were in since 1961.
The Hornets have gone undefeated in five seasons in school history; 2019, 2012, 2006, 1972, and 1963.
They played a all-time high 258 games when in the TVAA; with an 83-172-3 record. They have currently played 62 games in the LCAA. The Hornets currently are 48-14 since joining the conference. The Hornets have played 34 playoff games in school history, and are 14-20 in those contests. Overall, the Hornets have a .513 record with 646 games played, 328 wins, 311 losses, and seven ties.
The most positive point differential in the team’s history was in 1972 where they had a +356 point differential. Their lowest was in 1998 when they had a -327 point differential.
